Abstract

Since English is an international language, being able to communicate in English is very important in this globalization era. In Indonesia English is a foreign language that is taught to students. It is taught to students since elementary until university. It is expected that students are be able to speak and write in English. Thus, this research examined students‟ ability using phrase in writing descriptive text. The researcher chose writing skill because it is crucial as it gives the students the opportunity to produce languages that have been taught in the class. According to Richard, there is no doubt that writing is the most difficult skill for second language learners to master, the difficulty is not only in generating and organizing ideas, but also in translating these ideas into readable text. Through this research, the researcher investigated the students‟ ability using noun phrase in writing descriptive text at seventh grade in Mts Noor Aini Banjarmasin. This research was conducted at seventh grade of Mts Noor Aini Banjarmasin. The sample of this research was high class which consists of 22 students. This research used quantitative descriptive method with statistical analysis. Quantitative descriptive research was concerned with the test of individuals producing subjective data.The results of this study are: a.) the students‟ comprehension of noun phrase classified as good was 68, 2 %. b.) the students‟ comprehension of noun phrase classified as fair was 31, 8 %. From the result of the analysis, the researcher concluded that the students‟ ability using writing noun phrase in writing descriptive text at seventh grade of Mts Noor Aini Banjarmasin in the academic year of 2016/2017 are at good level generally.
