Abstract

This study was conducted under the considerations that eighth grade students of SMP need technique in the teaching-learning process. One ofthem is retelling story through the picture series. This thesis want tries to find out whether there is any significant difference in the improvement of students‟ mastery in speaking and to identify the effectiveness of RetellingStory Through The Picture Series in Speaking . To achieve the objectives of the study, the writer conducted an experimental quantitative research. Theexperiment was held through pretest posttest equivalent design. The population of the study was the Eighth Grade Students of SMPN 9 Banjarbaru. The total number of sample in this study was 30 students. The data were collected through speaking test. In solving the problems, the researcher carried out an experimentalstudy using statistical method called t-test. The computation result of t-test was10.548. the critical value of t was 2.045 for α = 5% and df = 29. Because t value was higher than the critical value of t 10.548>2.045, it could be concluded that there was significant difference in the achievement between the students who were taught using retelling story through the picture series in speaking and students who were taught without retelling story through the picture series in speaking. It could be concluded that retelling story through the picture series in speaking was an effective medium of teaching speaking. Referring to the experience in conducting this research, the writer offers suggestion to the teacher to improve the students' speaking in order to get better result. The effectiveness of retelling story through the picture series in speaking should be maintained frequently and recommended to English teachers, especially to teach Junior High School students in order to attract their motivation in learning English to be more fun.
