Abstract

Writing is important in our life and as a communicative act that transmits in information and links people together. However, writing is not an easy thing to do even it is the hardest language skill to master, writing has certain characteristics which seem to make it difficult for the students, especially for the young students. That‟s why so many students did errors when they wrote descriptive text.The statement of the problem is what type of errors the students do in writing descriptive text at the eight grade of SMPN 1 Kapuas Hilir school year 2016/2017? And the objective of the research is to know the common errors that the students do in writing descriptive text at the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Kapuas Hilir. The research was used quantitative method. It was carried out a population of 57 students at the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Kapuas Hilir. The researcher took the entire of the population that consists of 57 students to be included as the sample. The data collection involved an instrument. The instrument was test and the kind of test was written test. The test was done to know the result of quantitative data from the students‟ error in writing descriptive text. The data was analyzed by found out the students‟ each type of errors, they were singular and plural, article, addition word, capitalization, omission word, punctuation and tense. When the achievement of students collected, the research found that the students‟ error in singular and plural was 78, the errors in article was 59, the errors in addition word was 322, the errors in capitalization was 104, the errors in omission word was 402, the errors in punctuation was 82, and the errors in tense was 213. Where omission word is the greatest error the students made with the percentage of error is 31.9% while the lowest errors the students made is in article the percentage of error is just 4.683%. It means from 57 students that taken to be the sample, most of them were lack of mastering grammar. Through findings above, it will be the great issue for the teachers to pay their attention to their students‟ error when writing descriptive text. Because writing is an important skill that the students have to master in learning English
